Cresswell Street history

It would appear that the  row of terraced houses at the the bottom of the street (and, possibly, the whole street) were built by Dr Matthew Carrington Sykes.      The very last house displays his signature MCS plaque as proof of this.

Here is a similar plaque taken from a house  in Guest Road (photo courtesy of Ken Keen)

Matthew Carrnngton Sykes was born in Barnsley in 1860. By profession he was a physician and he lived on Regent Street in a house that stood where Burry and Walker Solicitors’ office currently is situated.  A blue plaque was placed on this site in 2008 to commemorate his contribution to the town (Barnsley Civic Trust, 2008).
